It's that time of year again. Nope, not just cold and flu season, over-eating season, and family argument season, but "Best of" season as well. Yet a recession is upon us (and me), and production costs have risen. While not wanting to sacrifice what makes this labor of love so special, the music, I have decided to take the "radical," or rather "belated", step of posting this year's "Best of" to the internets. Consider this blog the tan mailer chock full of dynamite tunes you've come to expect every December, only now you can receive this musical joy every time you log onto the world wide web. And for those of you who have never been the recipient of my "Best of" year-end mixes, now is your chance to share the magic.
To make up for the fact that no one will be receiving physical mix CDs this year (but really, who listens to those anyway? Weren't you just going to upload them to iTunes?), I have increased the usual song total. What started out as a 40 song "Best of 2004," has now blossomed into a 150 song "Best of 2008." Now, that should keep your ears satisfied for some time. 9 hours, 15 minutes, and 45 seconds, in fact, if you download the whole kit and caboodle.
But the genius of this year's presentation is that you don't have to blindly listen to things if you don't want to. Not interested in that whiny post-rock lead singer? Not down with grinding to a club jam or exposing the children aurally to such grinding? Couldn't care less about Euro-dance? Well fear no more!
First of all, I'm throwing a few "Recommended If You Like" (RIYL) phrases out to you for each song to situate it for you, dear listener, to pique or deter your precious interest. Also, I'm including an imeem playlist with each posting so you can stream each song before downloading to see if it meets your expectations of quality, consistency, and bootiliciousness. Lastly, you can follow the link for each song to my Box.net account and preview the song there before downloading if you wish (this will also be the best option for previewing songs that I have not been able to put in the imeem player).
So here, as usual, are the ground rules for the "Best of" mix:
1) All songs were released on albums that came out in 2008
2) There is only one song per artist that was released in 2008 that is allowed for the list. (In some cases, it was extremely hard for me to narrow the best of a record or artist to one song. But I did my best.)
Make no mistake, the "Best of" establishment aims to please. And I hope you will be pleased. And that you have a very merry holiday.
